This approach to gardening is derived from the rather more rigorous organic approach. You can find further useful information and help at these sites:

Sustainable gardening means we reduce our input of artificial fertilisers and sprays as most of them are based on valuable petrochemicals. There are two areas where we can do this:

Look after the soil by making your own garden compost and buying in well rotted manure. This will improve the structure of the soil by adding fibrous material that plant roots like. Artificial fertilisers are soon washed out of the soil and pollute the waterways. You will still need to use artificial feeds in the greenhouse and for outdoor pot plants. Look for ones that are based on natural ingredients.

Don't use pesticide sprays. It is worrying when you see hordes of aphids on your plants. Just remember there are plenty of other insects and animals that feast on aphids. Ladybirds and their larvae both live on aphids and other small plant feeders and there are many more, often less visible, insects doing the same. A pair of Blue Tits will catch 10,000 insects to feed their brood.

A pesticide free garden with a good range of different plants to attract all sorts of

predatory insects will achieve a balance and won't suffer from any serious insect

attacks. If your garden is small then persuade all your neighbours to do the same and create a pesticide free zone.
